2025 Bray Cares Grant Recipient
Imagine if you will, sleeping on dirt and scrub brush in the desert. Your tent has ripped, the cold night air whips through the holes, and you spend another sleepless night trying to stay warm. Could you endure days without end like this and still find the strength to walk into town, secure a job, manage medications, and attend therapy appointments? Would your life change overnight?
Now imagine, after months of struggling to sleep and feel safe, you enter a secure apartment with your very own mattress. This might be the first time you’ve slept solidly in weeks. After a couple of days, you wake better rested, energized, and finally able to focus on your goals. With staff guiding and coaching you, you start to feel like a human being again- like there is hope.
Earlier this year, one of our participants, “Jordan”, had been homeless for nearly three years, most recently living in train cars. When Jordan entered their new apartment, they immediately jumped onto the bed and cried, saying, “I can’t remember the last time I slept on a bed… I’m going to be sleeping good tonight.” For Jordan, that mattress was not just a piece of furniture- it was safety, dignity, and the first step toward stability.
Most housing resources are designed for families with children, leaving single young adults with very few options. Our Permanent Supportive Housing program fills this critical gap by offering safe apartments and wraparound services to youth ages 18–24 who live with a disability and have experienced chronic homelessness. Even so, essentials like mattresses are difficult to fund through traditional sources. Without them, residents must spend their limited income on basic survival instead of building the skills, education, and health they need for long-term independence.
